Spanish 3

Conducted in Spanish (with brief explanations/clarifications in English as needed). Conversational Communicative approach.

The goal of Spanish 3 is to present students with relevant scenarios and topics pertaining to the target language in a primarily communicative environment. This class is designed to expand students’ communicative abilities with the language through a conversationally driven dynamic, while also increasing their cultural and global awareness. Students review and solidify grammar components of the language in context.

Grammar focus: This course starts with a review of preterite/imperfect and present perfect. It progresses towards a deeper examination of future tenses. Heading towards mid-semester, the course moves into other more complex tenses, including present progressive and conditional. During the second half of the semester, the class offers an overview of the subjunctive mode in its different functions. This class also goes over other grammar focused aspects of the language at the advanced level, some of these as a review, and some others as primarily new content, such as comparatives/superlatives and clauses with si (hypothetical situations).

Vocabulary: We practice vocabulary in context, mostly examining a wide range of aspects related to Latin American History & Culture. At this level, students constantly engage in more complex discussions and topics, where they have an opportunity to formulate  complex ideas and interact with their classmates in active debate and conversational scenarios. Students also do short presentations on topics of their interest. We talk about a multiplicity of topics, including art, movies, literature, music, Latin American social movements, ecocriticism & history, among other subjects.
